Why HTML code for special characters?

To get special characters from other languages than English (German, Swedish, Spanish, Danish etc.) to show on an HTML web page, special codes can be used (for example ascii code). These are interpretted by the web browser and shown as intended.

The HTML code for special characters has not much to do with the standard ASCII or extended ASCII character sets.
