What is ASCII characters?

ASCII stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange and is a character encoding based on the English alphabet.

Computers can only understand numbers, so an ASCII code is the numerical representation of a character such as A, M or ? or an action of some sort.

ASCII was invented a long time ago. Most modern character encodings — which support many more characters than did the original — have a historical basis in ASCII.

For other languages than English it is not enough with the standard ASCII characters presented below. These languages use an extended ASCII or high ASCII character sets.

ASCII history

Work on ASCII began in 1960. The first edition of the standard was published in 1963, a major revision were made in 1967, and the most recent update were done in 1986.

ASCII defines codes for 128 characters: 33 are non-printing, mostly obsolete control characters that affect how text is processed, and 95 are printable characters.
